Child’s Play: Jason & Elle’s New Book (Fiction)

January 11, 2010

Elle & I are embarking on a new project!

We’re writing a new book, based on an idea that Elle has about a girl who starts seeing and hearing spirits… and who also starts going blind and deaf in the real world as her powers increase. Ultimately, an angel comes to her and gives her a choice: communicate with us and go deaf and blind in the real world, or go back to normal in the real world and never see/hear us again. The story is about her choice, the physical challenges she faces, the psychological challenges she faces in dealing with others’ disbelief, and the challenges her family faces in supporting their daughter while also trying to figure out what the heck’s really going on.

Elle & I have the plot, the characters, and the chapter outlines done already. All I have to do now is write it!

One thing: I’m committed to helping my friend Jeff Winicour first. I promised him I’d help him get his poems published, and that hasn’t happened yet.

Jeff had a pair of AVM-induced strokes a few years ago and is now confined to a wheelchair. He has been expressing himself through poetry and art… and I’m committed to helping him get to print.

This is what I do: help people get their ideas down on paper… and into people’s hands.

If you’d like to help me help Jeff, it’s easy—I’ve started a collection to raise the money needed to self-publish:

Elle & I don’t really need much right now; we’re pretty much in execution mode. But we will need test readers to sample some early drafts and help us refine our ideas. Interested? Let me know!

In the meantime, something for grins: people ask if my videos with Elle are rehearsed. Usually, we do the shot in one take. That keeps her reactions honest. But sometimes, the first take just isn’t usable, so we do a second or third. Here’s an example of why a second video is sometimes necessary:
