This is the fifth in a short series I’m running this week to show appreciation to people who have touched my life in unexpected ways. I encourage you to take advantage of this holiday season to give thanks to the people who have made an impact in your life, too.
I figured that Thanksgiving would be a good day to say “Thanks!” to my wife. We’ve been married 13 years, have two outstanding girls, and are committed to stay married to one another until we’re at least 100. Then, she says, I’m free to dump her for a younger woman. With an attitude like that, it’s easy to be thankful for many, many things when it comes to my wife. Here’s the one thing I’m most grateful for:
Her faith in me. Because of her trust in me, I am always in the company of someone who is smart, beautiful, and loving. I got very, very lucky in the wife department—I know plenty of relationships that end because one spouse or the other realizes that the marriage will never match up to their expectations, and here I’ve got a relationship that’s exceeded every one of mine, where my biggest challenge is to continue to hold up my end of the bargain. Having someone I respect and admire express her belief that I am, in turn, worthy of her respect and admiration is a gift. I think about that pretty much every day—usually at the end of the day, when I’m listening to her breathing and falling asleep.
It’s quite an exceptional relationship. Which is to be expected, since she is quite an exceptional person. Thank you, Vanessa.

You sum things up so well and you write for all others who do not possess the ability to express themselves as well as you do. (by the way, I left a few things out from the list that I taught you until you were old enough to understand – you vcan have the rest now.) Dad
God bless both of you, you’re kids and your marriage!
How refreshing to hear it told the way it was intended to be.
Ugh…not edit??? *your…
Even more ugh…no edit…you got me all emotional and illiterate, thinking about my dad and our family.
@Jennifer—
First of all, thank you.
Secondly—and more importantly—if I got you thinking (and feeling) about your family, that’s what it’s all about.
Finally, and least importantly of all, I could give a rat’s patootie about the typo. I post about 2 per week. Comes with the territory of online communications. Nice to know I’m in good company.
