Have sex. (A How to Self-Destruct outtake)

Every once in awhile, when writing a book, one needs to make an accommodation or two. (Because, you know, there are only so many people you want to antagonize at any given time.) The following piece on sex was one such accommodation. It comes from the “How to get things right” section of a chapter on personal life, and was replaced by something a little more… delicate.

What does sex have to do with career success, you ask? Everything. Especially for men, I think we can all agree that the gap between theoretical, optimal productivity and real, actual productivity is due more to thoughts about sex than any other subject. So without further ado, the outtake:

Deeply rooted in your biology are the urges to keep safe, to eat, and to procreate. Think about that: denying yourself sex is about as natural as denying yourself shelter. Would you give up dinner if someone claimed that it’s immoral to eat after four in the afternoon? Should sleeping outdoors be considered a sign of piety? Our continued obsession with the subject of sex not only caused an investigation into questionable presidential finances to detour into matters of a more personal nature, but it drove us to dig into those matters with such zeal that we ended up impeaching the leader of the free world for trying to keep his private life private!

We live in a world in which disagreeing with repressive, outdated laws can get you labeled a pervert. And where suggesting that maybe there should be some way to prevent a six year old from stumbling onto youporn.com can get you tagged an unconstitutional nut job. As a society, we’re not in a good place. Here’s the ultimate in irony: if someone’s hungry, the political and religious machines work to get that person food. If he’s homeless, they provide him shelter. But should he and his consensual partner want to get their freak on, look out! Sex is the source of life and, done right, much pleasure. Don’t let society’s collective confusion deprive you of this last vestige pure, natural joy left on earth.
