HR Happy Hour – Seiden Says

August 23, 2010

Smart people who know what (or who) their problem is, and what to do to fix it, can still run into trouble.

Sometimes, especially when working problems with “obvious” solutions, smart people create “invisible issues” for themselves by forgetting to pay attention to the emotional tone of their communications.

When this happens, these smart people can then find themselves in silly situations where everyone knows what must be done but no one’s willing to do it because they’re all in a huff over something that was said, or how it was said.

Especially how it was said.

This Thursday at 8pm EDT, on HR Happy Hour – the “Seiden Says” episode, I’ll be helping smart people break through this trap. I’ll help them get their boss, coworker, friend, interviewer, or even that girl who keeps turning them down, to see the light. And I don’t mean “help” in the “Oh, you should do such-and-such” abstract form of the word. On Thursday, I’m handing out the scripts to use in actual conversation.

To take part in the show, follow this link and click the “Remind Me” button. Listening to the show is as simple as coming back to this link Thursday evening and turning on your speakers. Or you can dial in when the time comes and listen in over the phone: (646) 378-1086. (How cool is that?!)

Before the show, if there is an issue you’d like help with, here’s what you’ll want to do to “hire” me and get that script:

  1. If you have an issue you’d like to have me address, either post it in the comments below as a question or email it to me. Please keep it short. (I can tell you right now, if you can’t articulate your issue in fewer than 300 words, then the first thing you need to work on is: you are too detailed.)
  2. Questions that get posted in the comments below will get answered on this blog. Maybe not tomorrow, though; keep that in mind.
  3. Start your inquiry with “Hey, Seiden” and end it with whatever name you want me to refer to you as. This way, you can protect your identity.

Let’s get those questions coming… and I’ll see you on Thursday!

I have a really awful pimple on my chin. I think everyone is staring at me and judging me. What should I do?

Jason Seiden August 24, 2010 at 8:50 pm

@laurie—Enjoy the fact that guys will be looking at your face first for a change.

When evaluating a candidate, how do you weight the various resources to make the decision. i.e. gut feel, culture survey, skills tests, psychometric tests, references, etc.?

Jason Seiden August 25, 2010 at 5:24 pm

@Lois—great question… that’s one I’ll tackle on the show for sure!

Never wrestle with a pig? Love it.

@glenn—I take at least one good thing from everyone I meet, even if the person is a megalomaniac jerk wad. This phrase was one such thing.
