Expertainment about Leadership & Management

Q: As a manager, I was thinking about setting up Draconian policies and then enforcing them ruthlessly… any thoughts?

November 29, 2006

A: By effectively eliminating the concept of the “minor infraction,” you will create an environment in which people who feel subversive will be compelled to subvert you in a big, big way. When the punishment for benign mischief is about equal to that for truly devious transgressions, then what’s the point of benign mischief? But since a change in punishments doesn’t eliminate the desire to do mischief, eventually you will be faced with someone who decides he or she wants to make his point, and then does so in a way in which the payoff is worth the punishment (read: brings your business to a standstill before getting carted off to jail)

This form of self-destruction is great for people who harbor secret desires to be famous, since it usually lands you on the 11 o’clock news.
