@Stacey—practice makes permanent. Love it. And yes, much of it is required in this realm!

@Jobs—Leading by example is easier said than done. (1) Many people lack the self-awareness to know what example they're setting. (2) Unintended consequences are frequent... e.g., you think you're exemplifying work ethic, but the way in which you do that leads others to perceive yo as modeling bureaucratic rigidity. Great thought, tough to implement.

One thing I learnt from how I was influenced by my previous managers before I went into management is that you should lead by example. If you don't do that you will never have the respect you need to manage people properly.

Great post and look into both sides of influence. I have always found that practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent. When you’re willing to commit to the work it takes to enhance your communication and ability to influence, the discomfort you initially experience disappears.

Jason,
Thank you for addressing the various elements of Influence. These distinctions are so important and often glossed over. These posts are fodder for our entire management team this week. We are discussing the difference between leadership and motivation. A number of your bullets help us with those distinctions.
Keep it up. We are taking many lessons from your wisdom.

@Charee—I think the whole topic of influences induces ethical reflection and soul-searching, and rightfully so. The whole idea of bending someone to your will conjures up a "do the means justify the ends" line of internal dialog. It's an important one to have.

@Dustin—Pragmatic set of tools... yes.

And yet, it's wise to recognize and understand the grittiness of influence and use it appropriately. Not in some Machiavellian feat of treachery, necessarily, but as a tool to accomplish the things that need accomplishing. Looking forward to Thursday's lesson!

Sad to have missed HRevolution10. I'll have to make up for it at HRevolution11!

Jason,
First, I really enjoyed your session on influencing behavior at HRevolution. Your deep knowledge and expertise on the subject got me thinking well beyond what I've come to know. And with this series, I thank you for sharing additional knowledge and insights on how to effectively influence peers, leadership & others.

I struggled ethically with yesterdays post on influence and manipulation being the same thing, maybe because I don't see myself as someone who would willingly manipulate another person. Influence obviously has a softer connotation however, I clearly understand your point...taken.

Thank for the crash course on the gritty side of this as well. I look forward to learning more from you in the coming days. Particularly how to influence while maintaining moral imperative to do good.
