The roar of our voices grows, the pace of knowledge creation increases, and yet I’m getting less information than ever before.
Engaging in media—new or old, it doesn’t matter—is fast becoming like watching little kids play soccer: so many people running to the same damn spot, rather than organizing and spreading out to cover a topic in its entirety. Or like watching an untended garden grow in warp time: each time an important topic begins to blossom, the weeds take over and smother it.
*Poof.*
It sucks, it’s wasting my time, and I’m calling “Bullshit!” Too many important topics are being beaten to death before any meaningful discussion can take place.
I’ve had enough, and more importantly, I’m doing something about it.
I know there are groups of highly capable people working hard to find a way to balance open discussions with some sort of editorial control. I’m a part of several. But those plans will take time to unfold. For now, let’s do something simple and immediate: let’s dismantle the bullshit and prune the weedy elements from important topics that need space and time to breathe.
Already on the docket are the following work-related topics:
- Work/life balance || work/life choices
- Generations at work
- Personal branding
- Behavioral interviewing
- Loyalty in the workplace
- Gen Y’s sense of entitlement
- Healthcare (yep, we’re going there—when I hear repeatedly from people who are staying in their jobs solely for health insurance, we’ve got an issue)
- The evil of office politics
- The relevance of HR accreditation
- The relevance of an MBA
- The need for formal authority to get things done
- Immigration and work
- The importance of “finding yourself.”
(If this is successful, maybe we’ll go broader and tackle the big issues of the day. One thing at a time.)
Got any other suggestions?
This series starts Tuesday and will become a regular weekly feature for at least the rest of this year…

Nice, Jason – this ain’t bull!
This looks great, Jason! I am looking forward to it. IMHO, people LIKE bullshit. They want their ears tickled in short sound bits that they can “skim” and pass off to others as real learning. In my latest blog post I call that being spoon fed. http://www.bretlsimmons.com/2009-11/are-you-a-spoon-fed-leader/ You are swimming against a very strong current hear, so let’s see what you have to say. Best! Bret
So, what do you have up your sleeve? You have my interest peaked and I have my pruning shears out. Ok, I don’t have any pruning shears but I’ll get some if I need to!
My favorite subject! Can’t wait to see what “comes out the other end” of this line of thinking!
