Life’s Simple Pleasures

July 19, 2010

What are your top 5 simple pleasures?

Elle & I compare notes in this video… it’s impossible not to share a moment of happiness with someone while having this conversation. so if you’re looking to amplify a good day, or turn a bad day around, ask yourself and someone else what your top 5 simple pleasures are, and then compare notes. Like this:

Why it works: this isn’t foo-foo New Age feel good squishness. It works because of a principal called cognitive dissonance, which is a fancy way of saying you can’t experience two opposing emotions at the same time. And when your bad day comes face-to-face with a feel good attitude, it’s the attitude that generally wins.

Of all the things you write about and post about, my favorites are always the vlogs with Elle. Not only do you both share your insights, it’s that peek into the father-daughter relationship that makes the meaning so much more special. Thanks to you and to Elle for giving a little of yourselves to us.

Victoria (my nine year old) and I like to have breakfast together too. Not oatmeal though but cold cereal. She her Cocoa Puffs and me my Apple Jacks. So I know what you mean, Elle, for making it your #1 simple thing that makes you happy!

What an awesome video.
I really enjoyed watching that.

It’s so true, that the feel good attitude does usually find a way to win.

Great stuff.

@Trish—Thank you, Trish. Shockingly, not everyone agrees. Some people find the kids awkward and vapid (read the comments). Too bad those people probably won’t read this post—they could use it!

@Thomas—Funny and true: Elle loves Cocoa Puffs, I love Apple Jacks.

@Noah—It just takes awhile, and it needs to be a specific good feeling.
