“Tell me about a time when…”
Don’t you just love those questions in job interviews?
I don’t.
I use a behavioral interview, and I find those “tell me” questions to be more or less a waste. Why? Because when it comes to things like social skills, I don’t care what you have to say. I care about what I SEE.
Don’t waste my time “telling me” anything about your interpersonal astuteness. SHOW ME.
Here we are: two human beings, in an interpersonal interaction. SHOW ME that you can “negotiate” for control of the interview in an astute, responsible way. SHOW ME that you know your place and you know which buttons you can push and which you can’t. SHOW ME that you know how to make a friend.
